- The Rouge River is gaining some green ground, thanks to a sea of volunteers who flood the area every year.
Over the past five years, volunteers from DENSO International America, Inc. have pulled more than 31,000 lbs. of invasive species, removed over 30 logjams, picked up tons of trash and planted a garden to green up the area.
This year, on June 7, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
, DENSO volunteers will be at it again. Not only are they removing logjams and trash, but volunteers will also be taking steps to keep the green going.
Rock On with Environmental Education
DENSO is partnering with Cranbrook Institute of Science
on a series of youth educational activities at this year’s Rouge Rescue cleanup event. Cranbrook will be on-site at DENSO sharing the importance of rocks and minerals, bugs, insects and animals through interactive activities.
Spreading the Green
As the river continues to recover and less invasive species return, DENSO is doing all it can to keep spreading the green, including prepping, planting and maintaining a native garden on the DENSO Southfield campus.
Working with the Friends of the Rouge
, City of Southfield
and Natural Community Services
, historically a team of more than 100 DENSO employees
and their families participate in the annual Rouge Rescue cleanup.
DENSO has supported Friends of the Rouge for more than 16 consecutive years, with financial contributions and participation in the Rouge Education Project and annual Rouge Rescue Cleanup events. DENSO, as a company, was born and raised in rural Japan – surrounded by local farmers whose livelihood was dependent on the land. Because of this upbringing, the idea of helping your neighbor and preserving the environment has long been engrained in DENSO’s 60-year history. With more than 100 volunteers every year, the Rouge River cleanup is DENSO’s largest annual environmental volunteer activity.
Volunteers will meet at DIAM, located at 24777 Denso Drive, just south of Franklin Road off Telegraph in Southfield.
Interviews are available
with team volunteers and company vice presidents. Great photo and video opportunities.
